Swimming With The Dolphins

Going out on a sunny morning to swim with wild dolphins has never been so reviving! Human fascination with these intelligent creatures is as old as humanity itself, and all those who have experienced a close encounter with them will carry these memories for a lifetime. Many operators around the planet offer dolphin interactions, but few involve truly wild dolphins, in their natural habitat, and even fewer will show more consideration for the dolphins than our partners in Mauritius do. One of the best spots around the island to observe wild dolphin behavior and interact with them is on the West Coast, in the bays of Black River and Tamarin, where the pods come to play, socialize and feed, attracted by the waters teaming with their favorite fishy breakfast.

You can see the dolphins throughout the morning, but swimming with dolphins cruises only operate between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
By 10:30 a.m., the dolphins start to move beyond the reef to hunt for schooling fish. The two species you will meet during this cruise are spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.

The spinner dolphin is generally seen in large pods, up to one hundred of them on the same spot; they like playing and are very active underwater, giving you a good hour of sport. Spinner dolphins will not exceed 80 kg and 8 feet in length, and it is common to see babies just other a feet long and probably weighing not more than 3 kg.

The bottlenose dolphin is the most common of the dolphin species worldwide. In Mauritius they live in smaller groups, between 2 to 15 individuals. Much larger than the spinners, they will weigh between 150 kg to 650 kg and will reach up to 12 feet long. Their behavior patterns are slightly different, as they tend to spend more time in the bays, sometimes until around 11:30 a.m., but it may also happen that we see them in the afternoon in the middle of the lagoon, in 1.5 meter of crystal clear water. They are very quiet and much easier to swim with, you might as well have them swimming around you.

The two species will never be found in the same spot, once the bottlenoses arrive the whole group of spinners will leave the bay to the open sea, they will not share the same spot.

We would recommend you to plan this experience at the beginning of your stay or at least 24 hours prior. For more information please contact the Watersports centre on

Speed Boat Trips

You can enjoy the huge lagoon around the "Bénitiers" Rock or cruise over the shallow waters to Bénitiers Island. You can even go shopping in Grand Bay in the Explorer speedboat, a much more enjoyable way than road transport.

Big Game Fishing

The island is renowned for being one of the best big game fishing destinations. With perfect conditions prevailing throughout the year the possibilities to fight giant Blue and Black Marlin, various sharks, yellow fin and dog tooth tuna and many other exciting fish are made available to experienced anglers and beginners. Be game for an exhilarating adventure out in the open ocean! Our guests can experience the thrill of the big catch, with a comprehensive big game fishing service, including return transfers from the resort to the boat pick-up spot.

Big game fishing trips are also a lot of fun because you never know what exactly is lurking underneath your boat, and the anticipation of what may strike your line is almost as exciting as catching a fish. Even if you don't catch the fish you are looking for, it's still more than likely you will catch all kinds of accidental species that are still fun to reel in.

The pursuit of getting the biggest fish you can find is not limited to personal glory or fishing tournaments. Big game fishing world records are hallowed accomplishments that will have your name forever enshrined next to a specific species. This is especially true for species notoriously hard to set a record for.

JP Henry Charters, our trusted partner, operates from a fishing centre located in the South-West of the island. For any further information regarding the season and rates please feel free to contact the Watersports centre
